What makes a towel amazing?

What makes a towel amazing? We think we know. The Soak&Sleep buying team has pursued the question with undying devotion: our research has taken us to hotels, department stores, and manufacturers all over the world.

And the answer is....

Well, it’s more complicated than you’d think. A high GSM (grammes per square metre) is a good start, but it doesn’t always make a better towel – there’s more to it than that. Type of cotton, construction, and weight all matter. But don’t fret. We’ve spent years creating a comprehensive range of towels – all perfect in their own way – and now we’re sure that one of them is absolutely right for you.

Bathroom Towels

The heavyweight contender, our Ultimate Supima Towel is a whopping 800 GSM of pure combed cotton – that’s thicker than some high street bath mats! It is made from an American cotton yarn (supima cotton) with longer, finer fibres: in fact they're 35% longer than the ones in traditional cotton. This means that there are fewer yarn ends, so you won't get as much bobbling or wear. This towel is about as thick and cuddly as they come. If you want something that’s lighter and quicker to dry, keep reading.

Our Luxury Towel is made from 100% Egyptian combed cotton and weighs in at 600 GSM. This is a little thicker than most high street rivals, but we think we have found the perfect mix of weight and drying time. With 120 fine, silky fibres in every cotton loop, our Luxury towels are outstandingly thick and plush. A firm customer favourite, these thick, luscious towels fly off the shelves. If you want something lighter in weight and price, come this way...

Our Classic Supersoft towel has a low twist pile which gives it super softness and incredible absorbency. At 450 GSM it has a lightweight texture that makes it incredibly practical (quick and easy to launder). This towel is the best value towel around; it wipes the floor with most average high-street offerings. Our Classics are perfectly tuned to fit in with your lifestyle - comfy and cuddly, quick-drying, and not too expensive. Get a big stack!

Finally – we know there are times when budget comes first. And for stocking up the airing cupboard, or low-cost towels for a new home, order a pile of towels from our Essential range. These 400gsm towels, still pretty brilliant, are sold in super-affordable bales.

Summer Towels

We call them summer towels because we think they’re perfect for the beach, pool, park and even just the garden. But we don’t mind if you want to use them in your bathroom all year round!

Hammam Towels - You'll be amazed by the compact size and relative absorbency of these traditional Turkish towels. Absorbing water just as fast as a normal terry towel, they dry you off in super-quick time. (Exactly what you want in a communal changing room!) At 175 GSM they are fine and easy to squash down, making them easy to carry. Made in Turkey, from 100% natural cotton with authentic tassel fringes (which means they make stylish sarongs, too).

Our classic lightweight towel is a fashionable take on the traditional Hammam towel. It has all the same great qualities – super absorbent, quick drying, and compact – but they are brighter colours with a thinner, funkier stripe. They’re also slightly thicker, weighing in at 250 GSM.

Ultimate Terry Waffle Towels - Will it be a quick dry-down or a lazy lie-down? These towels feature waffle on one side, terry towelling on the other - there's a side for all your bathing needs. This towel is also modelled on the legendary Hammam towel, but with a little luxury thrown in. Each towel is 100% cotton and 400GSM.

Towel sizes

Our main bathroom towels come in four classic sizes to suit your bathroom. We sell them all separately so that you can order one or two to re-stock. Face cloths and hand towels are everyday essentials. Bath towels are slightly smaller than bath sheets - you get an extra 6-7cm width and length on a sheet, ideal if you like to be well-wrapped. Because we’re a little obsessed with towels, we thought you might be too, so our Luxury Egyptian cotton range also features a Jumbo size….

  • Face Cloth: 30cm x 30cm
  • Hand Towel: 50cm x 100cm
  • Bath Sheet: 100cm x 160cm
  • Jumbo Towel: 130cm x 180cm
  • Summer Towels: 100cm x 170cm

We also offer extremely affordable towel bales (essential range only) comprising 2 face cloths (30 x 30cm), 2 hand towels (50 x 100cm), and 2 bath towels (70 x 140cm) - a great gift for first-time buyers, students, and newly-weds.

Types of towel

GSM – This is an abbreviation of grams per square metre. This is how the weight of a towel is measured; the higher the GSM the heavier and denser the towel.

Pile – Refers to the ‘loops’ of cotton that make up the towel. The longer (deeper) and denser the loops are, the thicker the pile.

Low Twist – Yarns are twisted to give the fibres strength. In a low twist towel, the fibres are usually stronger so there is no need for as many twists. Low twist creates an incredibly soft and snuggly towel.

Combed Cotton – Before the cotton is spun into yarn, it is carefully combed to get rid of any excess small fibres. This process reduces shedding and makes the towel softer and stronger.

Caring for your towels

When you first get your new towel, we recommend running it through the wash to get rid of loose fibres. Don’t reach for the fabric softener – it builds up on your towel and reduces absorbency, so use it as infrequently as possible.

Tumble drying towels is the very best way to keep them soft and fluffy. Crafty energy-saving trick: hang them out to dry and then pop them in the tumble dryer for 5 minutes.

Don’t let your towels come into contact with cleaning products that contain bleach. Beware: there are some face cleansers that contain a chemical that acts in a similar way to bleach and could discolour your towel.

If you pull a thread on your towel, just snip it off with some sharp scissors. It won’t do any damage, but snipping it short will keep your towel looking younger for longer.

All our towels have different wash care recommendations – please always check the label (or the product page).
