How to Make Your Bed

There’s something undeniably satisfying about slipping into a freshly made bed at the end of a long day. But, let’s face it, making the bed each morning can sometimes feel like a chore. The good news? With a few simple steps, you can transform this daily task into a quick, enjoyable routine that leaves your bedroom clean, calm and inviting.

Step 1: Start with a Clean Slate

Before you begin, make sure your bed is fresh and ready. Strip off any used bedding and, if time allows, let your mattress air out for a few minutes. This helps to dissipate any overnight oils and keeps your bed feeling fresh. For long-lasting freshness and an extra layer of comfort, pop on a pillow and mattress protector, and mattress topper. These not only prolong the life of your mattress but also add an extra layer of cleanliness and comfort.

Step 2: Fitted Sheet Fundamentals

Begin with the foundation of your bedding- the fitted sheet. Align the sheet’s corners with those of the mattress, starting at the head of the bed and working your way around. If you have a mattress topper or a thicker mattress, opting for a deep-pocketed fitted sheet ensures a snug fit and prevents midnight slippage. Once in place, smooth out any wrinkles for a crisp base.

Step 3: The Optional Flat Sheet

While not everyone uses a flat sheet, it can add an extra layer of comfort and warmth. Lay it evenly over the fitted sheet, allowing enough excess at the top to fold over your duvet later. Tuck the sides and foot of the sheet neatly under the mattress. For a polished appearance, employ the hospital corner technique: fold the excess fabric at a 45-degree angle at each corner before tucking it in. You can also use your flat sheet as a bottom sheet instead of a fitted sheet- just lay the sheet on top of your mattress and follow the same steps.

Step 4: Duvet or Blanket Placement

Next, spread your duvet or blanket evenly over the bed. Ensure it hangs uniformly on both sides for a balanced look. To achieve that luxurious hotel feel, consider using a duvet cover made of high-quality materials like Egyptian cotton or linen, which not only feel sumptuous but also enhance the bed's aesthetic. For an added touch of elegance, fold the top portion of the duvet back to reveal the flat sheet beneath.

Step 5: Pillow Arrangement

Pillows are the crowning glory of a well-made bed. Begin by plumping your sleeping pillows and placing them against the headboard. Incorporate at least four pillows, two firmer ones at the back and softer ones in front. Go one step further and add two large square pillows against the headboard to add depth and a touch of luxury to your bed. For a hotel-like feel, mix in some Oxford pillowcases with your standard housewife pillowcases and add some pops of colour with a few decorative cushions in the front.

Step 6: The Finishing Touches

To elevate your bed’s appearance further, drape a throw or bedspread across the foot of the bed. This not only adds a splash of colour or texture but also provides extra warmth on cooler nights. Making sure your bed linens are in a cohesive colour palette can create a serene and harmonious bedroom ambience. Playing with colour is also a great way to transition between styles and seasons without having to fully redecorate your bedroom.

In just a few simple steps, you've transformed your bed into a haven of comfort and style. Not only does a well-made bed enhance the overall look of your bedroom, but it also sets a positive tone for the day ahead. Plus, there's no better feeling than retreating to a neatly made bed at the end of the day.
