What is a double duvet?

A double duvet in the UK measures 200cm x 200cm (6ft 7” x 6ft 7”). They are square, which means you can’t put the duvet cover on the wrong way round. They are made to fit a mattress that measures 135 x 190cm (4ft 6” x 6ft 3”) so you should get plenty of overhang. However, if you share a bed you might want to go up a size and invest in a king size duvet instead. Want to know more about the different duvet sizes in our range? Visit our duvet size guide

Should you wash your duvet and if so how often?

Most duvets benefit from being washed regularly. This helps prevent allergens and bacteria building up so your duvet stays fresh and comfortable. We'd recommend washing your duvet every six months, depending on how often you use it. If you change your duvets with the seasons, wash and dry it thoroughly before putting it away.
Most domestic washing machines can only cope with a single duvet. If you are washing a double duvet or anything larger, take your duvet to a launderette or professional cleaners to ensure your double quilt gets a proper clean. Always read the care instructions and make sure you dry your duvet properly to prevent it from clumping and damaging the fill.

Which filling is best for duvets?

There's no 'best' filling for a double duvet, it depends what's important to you:
Down and feather fill - very insulative and luxurious. The more down you have in your double down duvet, the lighter, cosier and more expensive it will be.
Natural fill - fills such as wool, silk and cotton help regulate your body temperature as you sleep. They tend to be hypoallergenic, making them good for allergy sufferers. Natural fill duvets are less fluffy than other duvet styles and feel more like a heavy quilt.
Synthetic - easy to care for and can be machine-washed and tumble dried; ideal if you need to wash your bedding frequently. They are often more affordable than other duvet fills and have a fluffy, lofty feel.
