Linen is loved for its relaxed feel, natural breathability and timeless look. The best part is it actually gets softer and more beautiful with every wash.
Knowing how to take care of your linen properly is key to keeping it looking and feeling its best for years to come. As a natural fibre, linen has its own unique texture and charm, so a little gentle care goes a long way.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to wash linen bedding, whether you can tumble dry it, and how to avoid shrinkage.
How to wash linen
Keeping your bed fresh and inviting is simple, just wash your linen little and often by following these care tips.
-
Wash on a gentle cycle using lukewarm water (around 40°C). For finer linen, opt for 30°C. Always check the care label, as fabric blends can vary.
-
Choose a mild detergent designed for delicate fabrics, and avoid optical brighteners.
-
Skip the fabric conditioner Linen softens naturally over time, so there’s really no need for it - let nature do its thing.
-
Don’t overload the machine. Giving your linen space in the drum allows water to circulate properly and ensures a better clean.

Can you tumble dry linen?
Linen can be tumble dried, but aim to air dry where possible.
High heat can cause shrinkage and may weaken fibres over time. If you do use a tumble dryer, choose a low heat setting and remove the linen while it's still slightly damp.
For best results, we recommend a combination of tumble drying on low and then air drying. This helps preserve fibres, reduces creasing and keeps your linen looking its best for longer.
Hanging your linen to dry naturally also lets gravity work its magic on eliminating nearly all the wrinkles.
No ironing necessary (unless you want to)
One of the joys of linen is its beautifully relaxed, lived - in - look, so ironing is entirely optional.
If you prefer a smoother finish, iron on a low heat while the fabric is still slightly damp. Lighter colours can be ironed on both sides, while darker tones are best pressed on the reverse.
Just remember, high heat can damage fibres and lead to shrinkage, so keep things gentle.
Does linen shrink?
Yes, linen can shrink, particularly if it’s exposed to high temperatures.
But the good news? With gentle washing, low heat and a little care, shrinkage is easily avoided.
