Discovering nits in your household is never ideal. While it might feel like everything needs a deep clean, the reality is much simpler. With a few gentle steps, you can keep your bedding fresh, comfortable and hygienically clean.

How Long Can Nits Live on Bedding?

You’ll be pleased to hear, not for long! Head lice are happiest on the scalp, where it's warm and they have everything they need to survive. If they happen to fall onto bedding, they won't survive for more than a day or two.

So while it's sensible to wash your sheets, there's no need to worry too much. Head lice don’t live for long on pillows or bedding, and the chances of them spreading this way are low.

If you’re feeling cautious, a quick refresh, such as washing your bedding or hoovering can help put your mind at ease.

The key thing to remember is that head lice need warmth and a food source to survive, so they don’t live in your bedding. In fact, once away from the scalp they typically won’t survive more than 48 hours.

How to Get Rid of Lice from Bedding?

When it comes to bedding, a simple and thorough clean is all that’s needed.

  • Wash your sheets and pillowcases at 60°C where possible.

  • For non-washable items, sealing them in a plastic bag for 48 hours is usually sufficient.

  • Dry thoroughly, tumble drying on a high heat setting for at least 20 minutes is crucial. (Make sure your items are dryer-safe)

  • Change pillowcases regularly during treatment

  • Give mattresses and soft furnishings a quick vacuum to help you feel at ease.

No harsh chemicals, no complicated routines, just your usual wash, done well.

Having a spare set of bedding on hand can make things feel that bit easier to manage.
