How to Get Nail Polish Out of Bedding

Spilled nail polish on your bedding? Discover simple, effective ways to remove stains from cotton, linen and more with our step-by-step guide.

Spilled nail polish on your bedding? It happens, and while it can be alarming, most stains can be removed with the right approach.

The key is to act quickly, use the right method for your fabric, and avoid rubbing the stain deeper into the fibres. Here’s how to safely remove nail polish from your sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases.

What You’ll Need

  • Nail polish remover (acetone-based for tough stains)

  • Cotton pads or a clean cloth

  • Kitchen roll or paper towels

  • Mild laundry detergent

  • Cold water

Step-by-Step: Removing Nail Polish from Bedding

Act Quickly (if the Stain Is Still Wet)

Gently blot the stain with a paper towel to remove excess polish.

Avoid rubbing - this can spread the stain and push it deeper into the fabric.

Protect the Fabric

Place a clean cloth or paper towel underneath the stained area. This helps absorb the polish as it lifts out, preventing it from transferring further.

Apply Nail Polish Remover Carefully

Dab a small amount of nail polish remover onto a cotton pad and gently blot the stain.

  • Work from the outside in to avoid spreading

  • Use small amounts at a time

  • Always test on an inconspicuous area first

You should begin to see the colour transfer onto the cotton pad.

Rinse and Repeat

Rinse the area with cold water and repeat the process until the stain fades.

Gently pat dry - avoid rubbing.

Wash as Normal

Once the stain has lifted, wash your bedding according to the care label using a gentle detergent.

For best results, avoid tumble drying until you’re sure the stain is completely gone, as heat can set any remaining residue.

If the Nail Polish Has Dried

Don’t worry, dried stains can still be treated.

  • Carefully scrape away any excess polish with a blunt edge (like a spoon)

  • Follow the same steps above using nail polish remover

  • Be patient, older stains may take a few attempts

Fabric Matters: What to Watch Out For

Different bedding materials will need slightly different care:

  • Cotton bedding: Durable and generally responds well to acetone-based remover

  • Linen bedding: Treat gently and avoid over-saturating fabric

  • Silk bedding: Avoid acetone, opt for professional cleaning instead

  • Delicate or coloured fabrics: Always patch test first to prevent discolouration

How to Prevent Future Stains

A little extra care can go a long way:

  • Apply nail polish away from the bed where possible

  • Use a towel or surface protector when painting nails in case of any spillages

  • Keep a spare set of bedding on hand for quick changes

You might also consider using bedding and mattress protectors for an added layer of protection against everyday spills and stains.
