Memory Foam Mattresses FAQs

Does a memory foam mattress help with back pain?

A memory foam mattress can help with back pain by allowing your body to rest in a healthier position. If you sleep in a position that puts pressure on your spine, you may experience back pain – either when you're sleeping or when you get up in the morning. If used with an appropriate pillow, a full memory foam mattress will allow your spine to rest in a 'neutral' position. This, in turn, helps your muscles relax which can help ease or prevent back pain. It's important to remember that back pain can have a range of causes. We'd recommend you get medical advice to rule out any health problems that need professional attention.

Will a memory foam mattress keep me cool?

Memory foam mattresses work very differently to traditional sprung mattresses. They adapt to your body shape and sleeping position in response to pressure and your body's warmth. This is what makes them so adaptable and supportive. This, combined with the fact that memory foam is a particularly dense material that reduces air circulation, means some people get hot when sleeping on a memory foam mattress. There are several ways to prevent overheating when sleeping on a full memory foam mattress. These include choosing a memory foam mattress that's designed with a specialist cooling layer. You can also use a cooling topper on your mattress. Choosing natural fibres for your bedding and nightclothes will also help you feel cooler as you sleep.

Do I need a firm memory foam mattress or a soft memory foam mattress?

Memory foam mattresses aren't typically available in a wide range of firmnesses. That's because the memory foam itself is so adaptive and softens in response to your body's temperature and weight. Because a full memory foam mattress does not contain springs, it will feel less bouncy than a traditional sprung mattress. This means it may feel like a firm memory foam mattress. However, even a 'firm' memory foam mattress will be soft enough to adapt to your sleeping position. If you prefer a mattress which feels softer, you may prefer a hybrid memory foam mattress. These contain memory foam and pocket springs to give you the softer 'bounce' you prefer from your bed.
