What are synthetic mattress toppers made from?
We have a choice of synthetic mattress toppers. The Soft as Down mattress topper is filled with lovely soft microfibre and encased in a soft peachskin polyester. Our Soft as Down with silk mattress topper is filled with a blend of soft microfibre and cooling mulberry silk and cased with pure jacquard cotton.
Can you wash a synthetic mattress topper?
Our microfibre mattress toppers are both fully washable. Because they’re bulky, we’d recommend you take them to a professional for a better clean and a thorough dry – damp microfibre will clump, damaging your mattress topper.
Memory foam mattress toppers are also made from synthetic fibres but must not be machine washed. Find out more about caring for synthetic mattress toppers in our care guide.

Is a microfibre mattress topper a better material to use for comfort?
Microfibre mattress toppers are a wonderful way to add instant comfort and softness to a mattress. Microfibre - and other synthetic fills - are lofty and soft, making them a favourite with many sleepyheads. Some people prefer a microfibre mattress topper because they are made without feathers, down or wool. Although a microfibre mattress topper is a wonderful addition to almost any bed, some people dislike the way they trap heat. This can mean that a microfibre mattress topper can make matters worse if you are prone to overheating at night. To combat this, consider pairing your microfibre mattress topper with a cooling mattress protector.
Are synthetic mattress toppers better than down and wool mattress toppers?
Synthetic mattress toppers, such as a microfibre mattress topper and those made with memory foam, are a popular choice with many UK sleepyheads. They're an easy way to add support, comfort and warmth to your bed. Whether they're better than down and wool mattress toppers is a matter of opinion. Down and wool mattress toppers have many benefits - they're made with natural materials and this means they're more breathable, making them ideal for those who overheat at night. It also means they can be composted at the end of their useful life. In contrast, synthetic mattress toppers are seen as more suitable for those with allergies as they can be washed and dried more quickly. Another factor to consider is price. A microfibre mattress topper is typically less expensive than one filled with down or wool, and this makes them more affordable for many people.
