Mattress Care Guide
Mattress Care Guide

Upon receipt of your mattress, remove all outer packaging and air your mattress. You may notice a slight odour when removing the mattress from it's packaging, this is normal and will dissipate after airing for a couple of days. Your mattress may also have compressed slightly during the delivery process, leave to air and this will rectify.
How often should you rotate your mattress?
Your mattress will adapt to the weight and contours of your body. Rotating your mattress from foot to end for non-turn mattresses will help to keep the filling even. Turnable mattresses should be flipped and turned in rotation for the same reason. Hypnos mattresses need extra attention to this in the first few months of owning one to ensure even distribution of the fill.
How to keep your mattress fresher for longer?
- We strongly recommend use of a mattress protector to protect your investment from accidental spills and stains.
- Wash your protector when you wash your bed linen every week to keep your bed in good condition and feeling fresh.
- Buying a second protector allows you to rotate with the weekly wash.
- We recommend that you air your bed every day by turning back the duvet.
- Once a week you should air the bed for a few hours turning back all bedding from the mattress to allow any moisture to evaporate.
- Always retain and read care instructions delivered with your mattress.
How to clean a mattress cover
It’s important to look after your mattress. Even if you use a mattress protector, we still recommend taking a look at your mattress from time to time.
- Gently vacuum the surface of your mattress, using the upholstery attachment, to remove any dirt and dust.
- If the mattress surface has become dirty or soiled, try using an upholstery shampoo, warm water and a sponge on the specific area, always allowing the mattress to dry thoroughly before re-dressing your bed.
How to make your mattress softer?
If you’re struggling with the comfort of your mattress, there are several things you can do to reduce the firmness.
- If your mattress is quite old, you should start considering looking to upgrade to a new one that will have the comfort you’re looking for. We recommend replacing your mattress every eight years. Browse our buying guide to help you make your decision.
- Find the right mattress topper to suit your needs. Mattress toppers not only enhance your comfort, but they are a quick and cost effective way to alter the firmness too.
- Look at altering your sleep position as some firm mattresses are better suited to certain sleep positions to properly support your joints. You could even see the difference sleeping without a pillow could make.
Looking after your mattress in the right way can expand its lifespan and aid your sleep. But it isn’t just your mattress that can benefit from your care. Your duvet can also be cared for from time to time to keep the filling even and the material hygienic. Explore what you need to know to keep your duvet in top condition with our useful guide.

Pocket sprung
This mattress contains 5750 springs, each working independently for exceptional comfort and support. Cortec™ Quad springs are unique heat-sealed units of four pocket springs that are smaller and finer than the pocket springs you might find in other mattresses. They precisely contour around your body for adaptive support while independent HD springs provide extra lumbar support thanks to their three dimensional shape. The Cortec™ Quad springs in this mattress are made without glue for a greater range of movement for each spring, excellent airflow to support temperature regulation and a fully recyclable spring unit, free from chemicals.
Temperature regulating fills
These mattresses contain layers of three different fibres, each known for its highly effective temperature-regulating abilities. The fully traceable, extra-insulating Herdwick wool is naturally antibacterial and adds a soft, springy layer and to help you stay warm as you sleep. Breathable linen is light and absorbent for extra comfort while home-grown hemp fibres are absorbent, breathable and naturally resistant to mildew for an even healthier night's sleep.
Healthier sleep, kinder to the planet
This special mattresses is completely free of foam and glue. It is also naturally fire-retardant without the use of additional chemicals, using a wool/viscose blend instead. These choices mean your Harrison Spinks mattress is fully recyclable as well as healthier to sleep on - better for you and the environment.
British made
These superior mattresses are made in Yorkshire by Harrison Spinks - a fifth-generation family bedmaker, handcrafting premium luxury mattresses since 1840. Their leading-edge approach to sustainable manufacturing has been recognised with two Queen's Awards for Enterprise in Sustainable Development, placing them as one of Great Britain's most established, innovative and sustainable bed manufacturers. They also hold a Carbon Neutral+ accreditation and are members of the National Bed Federation. Because these mattresses are so special, they are handmade to order. Read our care guide to get the best from your mattress and to ensure your guarantee remains valid through its lifetime.
Tailored luxury
Each mattress feels all the more blissful to sleep on because they are tailored to your exact needs. You can choose the firmness of your mattress to suit your sleeping style. If you sleep on your front or back, you'll suit the firmer tension option. If you are a side sleeper, then the medium tension mattress will be a better choice.
Soft & breathable
The wool and viscose blend fabric are soft to the touch and naturally cooling and breathable, enhancing the performance of the high quality fillings.
Regular depth
At 25cm deep, this mattress works with regular depth fitted sheets and protectors.

Your mattress will feel different according to the base it's placed on. Any bed base will work, so long as it is well-ventilated - your mattress needs to breathe for it to stay in good condition. Always choose the right size mattress for your bed base. Too small, and it will look strange, too large and you'll damage the mattress. Sagging or broken bed bases will damage your new mattress, we recommend buying a new bed base at the same time as your mattress. If you intend to use a slatted base, the slats should be no more than 7cm apart.
Made to last
Handcrafted by skilled bed makers, everything about this mattress is made to the highest quality and has been made to last. The tufting ensures the internal structure of the mattress remains sound while creating a deep and luxurious sleeping surface. Side stitching and an outer support frame keep the mattress in good shape and add support to the structure and sides. This mattress should be regularly turned to increase its lifespan. The stitched handles help you position your mattress with ease. For further information, see our care guide below.
Welcome your new mattress
You may notice a slight odour when removing your mattress from its packaging. This is normal and will go away after couple of days. Your mattress may also have compressed slightly during the delivery process; leave your mattress to air and it will quickly bounce back into shape.
Regularly rotate
Your mattress will adapt to the weight and contours of your body; rotating your mattress from foot to end will keep the filling even and extend the life of your mattress. Rotating a mattress is a two-person job, so get some help.
Settlement is normal
After a few weeks of use, you might notice that the sleeping areas are wearing more quickly than the rest of the mattress. Don't panic! Mattresses with very soft, natural layers do naturally compress slightly and it's a sign of a high quality fill. You can minimise this settlement by regularly rotating your mattress and using a mattress topper.
Protect what's precious
Always use a mattress protector. It helps keep your mattress fresh and clean and extends the life of your mattress.
Spot clean only
If you spill on or mark your mattress, spot clean it with soapy water and a cloth. Allow it time to dry thoroughly before making up your bed again.
Pull back the covers
Pull back your duvet to air your bed while you're getting ready for the day. This helps excess moisture to evaporate so your bed stays fresher and cleaner. Once a week you should air your bed for a few hours by turning back all bedding from the mattress to allow any moisture to evaporate.
