Bed Linen Care Guide

Bed Linen Care Guide

Once you have received your bed linen and are happy with your choice, we recommend washing before use. This will allow natural shrinkage in the fabric to occur. All of our bedlinen sizing takes into account its natural shrinkage for a great fit after washing.

Before you start, always check the care label on the product for clarity on washing and ironing temperatures and the suitability of use of bleach, tumble drying and dry cleaning.

When washing polycottons and cottons, always use the best detergent for the product you are washing: for colour fabrics, including light colours, it is best to use washing gels or detergents formulated for colours and for pure whites, stick to powders. Avoid using optical brighteners to prevent colours becoming washed out and to avoid any staining patches from the bleach within them.

Wash bedding on its own and do not overload the washing machine to ensure a thorough wash. Avoid excessively high temperature washing or drying cycles as they will likely result in fabric distortion and excessive shrinkage. Ironing linen whilst it is still a little damp will make it easier to iron. Wash bed linen very frequently for a clean bed and to avoid any discolouration to the fabrics. We recommend a minimum of once a week. Airing your bed every morning will allow the bed to breathe and for any moisture to evaporate.

Looking after French Linen

When washing French Linen please ensure that you do not use any products containing bleach. Bleach is not a friend to linen fibres as it destroys their strength and will most certainly affect the colour of your linen. Always check for bleach or bleaching agents in detergents and optical brighteners to avoid damage to the fabric. Always use the best detergent for the product you are washing: for colour fabrics it is best to use washing gels or detergents formulated for colours and for pure whites, stick to powders. Linen's naturally crimp fibres result in a wonderfully relaxed look after washing and drying with little need for ironing. If you prefer a smoother finish, ironing linen whilst it is still a little damp will make it easier to iron.

Looking after Silk

Washing silk requires special care, and we recommend always washing with a silk-specific detergent. Do not use biological detergents as they contain enzymes that will destroy the silk fibres during the washing process. Avoid using optical brighteners to prevent colours becoming washed out and possible staining from the bleach within them. With silk it is very important to iron only when completely dry - do not iron when damp, and always use the silk setting on your iron.

Sleep more comfortably

The linen on our ruffled bedding has superb temperature-regulating abilities. This is because it has a hollow fibre structure that is stronger and more absorbent than cotton. It is this that helps regulate your body temperature as you sleep. Linen is refreshing in the summer, cosy in the winter and a fantastic choice for those who suffer with hot flushes and overheating at night.

Pure French Linen

Our ruffled bedding is made with pure French Linen, the long staple lengths of this high quality linen create a beautifully soft, textured fabric that just gets better with age.
