Which means a problem for you - which blanket or throw will you choose to buy?

What's the difference between a throw and a bedspread?

A bedspread is a lightweight, quilted cover used to decorate your bed. A throw is not only an aesthetic piece in the bedroom, but they also provide great warmth. Bedspreads are usually the full size of the bed, able to cover everything including pillows. Throws measure up smaller than a bedspread and are perfect to throw on the end of a bed. Discover more about our differences between bedspreads and throws.

Bedspreads & Bed Throws FAQs

How do I choose the best bedspread for my bedroom?

Wondering how to choose the best bedspread for your bedroom? Here are a few things to think about. What look are you going for? A rustic, country cottage vibe suits cosy knitted throws or quilted cotton bedspreads, while a chic, upmarket look demands rich velvet and silky luxury quilted bed throws. What's your colour scheme? Choose similar colours to your bedding for a calm tonal look, or add a splash of colour with a bright knitted throw to brighten an otherwise neutral bedroom. How warm is your bedroom? If it's on the chilly side, go for a heavier bedspread or choose several throws that will work as an extra layer to keep you warm at night. If you have a warm bedroom, opt for a lightweight bedspread or throw that you can remove easily at bedtime and replace quickly when making up your bed in the morning.

What's the difference between a bedspread and a throw?

Many people say that there's very little difference between a bedspread and a throw, and as a result, the words are often used interchangeably. Both bedspreads and throws can be made with a variety of materials. Wool is a common material for throws, but it also suitable for a very cosy bedspread. Lightweight cotton bedspreads are popular in warmer climates, and many people have lightweight cotton throws in their homes too. However, there are some subtle differences. A throw is typically smaller than a bedspread and is a more decorative item, perhaps used at the foot of a bed for colour and texture. Throws can also be used elsewhere in the house - for instance, it's common to see a throw on a cosy sofa. In contrast, bedspreads are normally larger and often cover an entire bed, sometimes reaching the floor.

Should bedspreads touch the floor?

Whether or not your bedspread should touch the floor is very much up to you. Some people love the luxurious appearance of a bedspread that reaches to the floor. It creates a rich, indulgent appearance. There's another benefit to having a bedspread that touches the floor - it hides anything that's under your bed. That makes floor-touching bedspreads the perfect foil for divan bases and under-bed storage. However, not everyone feels this way. Some people prefer their bedspreads to sit above floor level. It can help create a more modern appearance and is especially effective if your have a beautiful bedframe that you want to show off. What's more, keeping your bedspread above the floor means it's out of the way of any dust that's at floor level, helping keep your bedspread at its best for longer.

How do you make a throw look good on a bed?

There are no rules when it comes to styling your bed with a throw. Here are a few ideas:
- neatly fold your throw in half lengthways and lay it across the end of your bed.
- open up your throw and position it towards the end of the bed so it nearly touches the floor
- take several throws in a range of colours and textures and lay them out on top of your made-up bed. Now, starting with the uppermost throw, fold them back for a cosy and inviting bed.
- fold your throw into a small, neat rectangle and place it over the foot of your bed. This creates a splash of colour without adding layers to a bed - perfect for a guest room.
- take the centre of your throw and gather it into a loose triangle shape. You can now place it over one corner of your bed for a casual accent.
