Pocket Sprung Mattresses FAQs

What is a pocket spring mattress?

A pocket spring mattress is sometimes also referred to as a pocket coil mattress. In a pocket spring mattress, each spring is individually cased, working independently so you get reactive support and movement where you need it. This is different to a continuous spring mattress where the springs are interconnected and move in response to one another – a little bit like a ripple effect. Because of the way the springs move independently, pocket sprung mattresses are very good news for anyone who shares a bed. That’s because you’ll barely notice your partner’s movements – making them especially practical if one of you is a light sleeper or if you go to sleep and get up at different times.

One of the other benefits of a pocket spring mattress is the ‘memory’ in the springs. This means the mattress ‘bounces’ back, for a springy, supportive sensation. Good quality pocket spring mattresses will last for many years to come.

How often should you turn a pocket sprung mattress?

As with all mattresses, you should turn and rotate your pocket sprung mattress regularly to help ensure even wear across the mattress. Doing this every few weeks will help your mattress last for longer and ensure the fillings stay even across the mattress. If your mattress is a non-turn mattress, then rotating it from top to bottom every few weeks will help it stay at its best. Find out more about caring for your mattress in our mattress care guide.

How is a pocket sprung mattress different from an open coil mattress?

A pocket sprung mattress is made with hundreds of individual springs, each inside its own little ‘pocket’. Each spring is separate from its neighbours, and this means they work independently of one another. If you move as you sleep, only the springs that support you will move. In contrast, an open coil mattress has hundreds of little springs, and each spring is connected to its neighbours. Because the springs in an open spring mattress are joined to one another, they move as one. Therefore, if you move as you sleep, all of the springs in the mattress will respond in some way. This is less of a problem if you sleep alone, but if you share a bed, you may find that you get disturbed by your partner’s movements.

How do pocket spring mattresses improve sleep quality?

Pocket spring mattresses help you sleep more soundly because they reduce the disturbance you might notice from your partner. A pocket sprung mattress has hundreds of individual springs, each inside an individual little ‘pocket’. Because each spring is separate, they work independently of one another. This means that if you or your partner moves at night, only the springs that move are those that support you or your partner. In contrast, the springs in an open coil mattress are joined to one another, meaning they all react to movement in a gentle ‘wave’ movement.
Choosing a pocket spring mattress means you’re less likely to wake up when your other half moves around. Pocket spring mattresses are especially useful if one of you is a restless sleeper or comes to bed late/gets up early.

How long does a pocket sprung mattress last?

All Soak&Sleep pocket sprung mattresses are covered by a guarantee which ranges from one year to five years. However, you can expect your pocket sprung mattress to last for longer if you care for it well. To get the most from your pocket sprung mattress, we recommend the following:
- place your mattress on a correctly sized, well-ventilated bed base
- use a mattress protector
- pull back your duvet and blankets each morning to let your bed air
- wash bed linen and your mattress protector regularly
- rotate and, if relevant, turn your mattress with each season to encourage it to wear evenly
- treat accidents and spills promptly, allowing your mattress to dry thoroughly before making and using your bed.
