Double Bed Sheets FAQs
What are the dimensions of a double bed sheet?
In the UK, typical double bed sheet measurements are as follows:
A fitted sheet measures 135 cm x 190 cm with a depth of 25 to 40 cm for deeper mattresses
A flat sheet is usually 230 cm x 275 cm
For deep mattresses or those with toppers, a deep fitted sheet with extra depth of 30 to 40 cm is recommended.
Can I put a double sheet on a single mattress?
Yes, you can put a double sheet on a single mattress, but it may not fit properly. A standard UK single mattress measures 90 cm x 190 cm, while double bed sheets are designed for 135 cm x 190 cm mattresses. If using a double fitted sheet, it will be too loose and may bunch up. A double flat sheet can work if tucked in securely, but there will be excess fabric. For a better fit, a single bed sheet is recommended.
What is the difference between a fitted and flat sheet?
A fitted sheet has either elasticated corners or elasticated corners and edges. This covers the mattress snugly and avoids any need for tucking the sheet under the mattress itself. A flat sheet is a rectangular piece of fabric that can act either as a bottom sheet on top of your mattress or as a light layer under your duvet. It can be tucked around and underneath the corners of your mattress for a comfortable sleep.
