Double Mattress Toppers FAQs
How to choose a mattress topper for your double bed
- Choose the right size. Double bed mattress toppers are exactly the same size as a standard double mattress: 135 x 190cm (4ft 6" x 6ft 3"). It's important to match the size to your mattress because choosing one that’s too large or too small could damage your topper or affect the quality of your sleep. Read our size guide to find out more.
- Choose the right fill. Our double mattress toppers come in a range of fills including supportive memory foam, cosy wool and super-soft microfibre. Find out more about the range of fills in our mattress topper buying guide.
How to clean a mattress topper
The best way to clean your mattress topper depends on what it’s made from – the fill affects the way in which your double mattress topper can be washed and dried. Find out more about cleaning your mattress topper in our care guide.
Because mattress toppers are bulky, it’s better to protect them and keep them clean. Using a mattress protector on top of your double mattress topper will help prevent stains and spills from reaching your mattress topper. It’s also helpful to give your mattress topper some fresh air now and then – leave your bed unmade for an hour or so when you change your sheets to let your topper air and stay at its best.
Which is better foam or down mattress topper?
If you're not sure whether to choose a memory foam mattress enhancer or a down mattress topper, it's best to stop and think what you want your mattress topper to do for you. Which is more important - support for your joints and spine, or a soft layer on top of your existing mattress? A memory foam mattress topper will add support, but feels firm with a 'sinking in' feeling that comes as you lay on the foam. In contrast, a down double mattress topper is blissfully soft but has a more traditional feeling with support coming from the feathers and down in the topper.
Do mattress toppers help with back pain?
A mattress topper can help with back pain by giving you the chance to rest in a fully supported position. A memory foam mattress enhancer is often recommended as a mattress topper for back pain, but different people have different preferences. A mattress topper may not always be the right solution for resolving back pain as there are many different causes for this condition. It is always best to talk to a medical professional about ongoing pain, as they will be in the best position to advise you on how to treat it.
