Mattress FAQs

How often should you change your mattress?

Although official guidance says you should replace your mattress around once every eight years, what’s really important is how your mattress looks and feels.

If your mattress is stained, damaged, uncomfortable, noticeably sagging or dipping, it’s probably time for you to invest in a new mattress. Doing so will help you sleep better and give you more energy to go about your day. You may also find a decrease in the number of allergies you suffer. That’s because old mattresses are a haven for dustmites and allergens – something that can dramatically affect your health on a daily basis.

What mattress should I buy?

The best bedmakers use natural materials like cashmere and wool because these improve breathability for a more comfortable night’s sleep.

Sharing a bed? We'd always recommend going as large as you can! If you have the room, choose the minimum of a superking mattress to minimise disturbance from your partner. Or go one step further and choose a Zip & Link bed. These mattresses feature two individual spring systems that respond individually to your needs and your partner will disturb you less during the night. What's more, Zip & Link allows you to switch between singles and double bed size for the ultimate flexibility. If your mattress feels too firm, too soft or you want to create more comfort, add a mattress topper.

What is the most comfortable mattress?

Ask a hundred people what the most comfortable mattress is, and you’ll get a hundred different responses – we’re all different and all prefer different things! Choose a mattress that suits your sleeping position and one that gives you high-quality support with pocket springs. Side sleepers will benefit from a medium firmness mattress while back and front sleepers will get the most benefit from firmer mattresses

If your mattress is too firm or too soft, you can add a topper to adjust the firmness to suit your preference.

How do you clean a mattress?

Keep your mattress at its best by using a mattress protector to guard against spills and stains. From time to time, it’s important to give your mattress a clean by gently vacuuming the surface of your mattress, using the upholstery attachment, to remove any dirt and dust.

If the mattress surface has become dirty or soiled, use an upholstery shampoo, warm water and a sponge to help remove the stain. Make sure you allow the mattress to dry thoroughly before making up your bed again.

When should I flip my mattress?

Not all mattresses need to be flipped. Those with a cushion top or which are marked as ‘no-turn’ should be rotated only. Flip and rotate your mattress every few weeks – once a month is perfect. Doing this helps ensure a more even wear on the mattress fill, helping it last for longer.
